Health & Safety Program

In addition to preparing a health and safety policy employees must also have a program in place to implement that policy. This program will vary, depending upon the hazards encountered in a particular workplace. Program elements may include all or some of the following:

  • Worker training e.g.., new employees, new equipment, new job procedures
  • Workplace inspections and hazard analysis
  • Analysis of the accidents and illnesses occurring at the workplace
  • A health and safety budget
  • Lock-out procedure
  • Machine guarding
  • Material-handling practices and procedures
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Housekeeping
  • Personal protective equipment, e.g.., respirators, hearing protection
  • Emergency procedures
  • First-aid and rescue procedures
  • Ongoing weekly and monthly safety training for employees and management
  • Frequent on-site safety inspections of client properties
  • Ongoing WMIS, First Aid and CPR training
  • Active Joint Health and Safety Committees
  • OSHA compliant

Pandemic Planning

Our Goals & Priorities are to:

1.Gather and Distribute pertinent information.
Rosegarden will be gathering information through a variety of sources; Through Safety Groups so as to discuss challenges and best practices; We will monitor the Region for web sites for up to date information concerning clinics, best practices and new information; Rosegarden will participate in Pandemic Planning through the International Centre for Infectious Diseases and will try and get on their email list to get valuable information, news statements, and business tools.

2. Protect our Staff and Clients.
During the approaching months we will be providing educational lessons to our staff about the H1N1 flu and steps to protect their well being; We will be concentrating on a strict hygiene regimen: coughing into our sleeves, washing our hands regularly, using hand sanitizers, wearing protective gloves as often as possible when permitted ,sanitizing all equipment, vehicles and so forth, resting when sick and reducing contact with sick individuals; We will maintain contact with all our clients through a variety of media: telephone, email and lastly meeting one-on-one; We are asking all clients to provide us with pertinent contact information so we can communicate better through email and telephone and further contact numbers in case of an outbreak in order to further reduce the risk.

3. Be Prepared.
Our staff will be trained to protect themselves and others during this time of H1N1 flu; We will be working on policies to ensure we have backup staff this winter and summer; We will begin cross-training more staff on the various pieces of equipment; Our supply of salt and ice melter will remain constant and we have arranged for second and third suppliers should a problem exist with our main supplier; We are working on a communication chain within Rosegarden and with our clients to ensure questions are answered in a timely fashion and that we have no service interruptions.

Global warming is very relevant to us. We are always focused on preserving the environment and reducing our footprint on the earth. Through our Environmental Policies, Rosegarden strives to become a greener company and make the environment a better place for everyone.

All of our gardens are designed to reduced construction waste.It is our mission to reduce the materials we use, to use only the least toxic, post consumer products available, and to recycle 90% or more of the waste that we produce. It is our goal to reduce our non-recyclable waste to zero.

Training

Rosegarden is committed to meeting standards by obtaining accreditations in its industry related programs.  Our goal is to obtain certificates for the following to better serve our customers:

  • Certified Landscape Professional (C.L.P.)
    This program focuses on the training and development of the business skills required to run a successful operation. This is achieved by completing a series of written evaluations in the areas of Financial and Legal, Human Resources, Marketing, Leadership and Corporate Citizenship and Horticulture Operations.
  • St. John Ambulance – Emergency First Aid
    This course is well suited to those who would like the basics in First Aid and CPR in a one day program. This offering is suitable for general interest, office staff, and companies with fewer than six employees. Provincially recognized certificates which meet Canadian Labour Code, valid for three years, are issued upon completion. Topics covered include: Emergency Scene Management, Shock, Choking and Severe Bleeding. Recommended for people who are interested in first aid for at home purposes, or for workers who will act as secondary first aid providers.
  • St. John Ambulance – Standard First Aid
    Designed to meet industry, business and government requirements, Standard Level First Aid is a modular course for those who want to learn more first aid skills. Provincially recognized certificates which meet Canadian Labour Code certification, valid for three years, are issued upon successful completion. Topics include: Emergency Scene Management, choking, Severe Bleeding, Wound Care, Burns, Poisons and much more. Available with CPR A/B/C and AED. Recommended for people interested in more advanced first aid knowledge, and for workers who will act as primary first aid providers.
  • WHMIS
    The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s national hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are cautionary labelling of containers of WHMIS “controlled products”, the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and worker education and training programs.
  • IAPA
    Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA), Ontario Service Safety Alliance (OSSA) and Farm Safety Association (FSA) amalgamated on January 1, 2010 into a new health and safety organization in order to bring more innovative and cost-effective health & safety solutions to firms across Ontario.
  • CONFINED SPACE ENTRY
    Delivered in cooperation with the Municipal Health and Safety Association (MHSA). This course helps you to describe how to identify a confined space; describe the new legal requirements for a confined space program and plan; and understand and apply the requirement for a confined space plan in order to build a plan for their workplace.
  • WORKPLACE SAFETY STANDARD
    This program focuses on the practical application of the standard for engineered solutions as well as safety-related work practices for maintenance and installation requirements; flash hazard and shock hazard specific work practices; appropriate selection and use of personal protective equipment; and requirements for other special equipment.
  • TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS
    This program is designed for anyone who handles offers for transport, or transports dangerous goods, in which he/she must be adequately trained and hold a valid training certificate.
  • WORKPLACE INSPECTIONS
    A proper inspection process and the right tools in place is a must in the workplace. Designed to build knowledge and develop skills when conducting workplace inspections. Ideal for those responsible for workplace inspections including employers, supervisors, and joint health and safety committee members.
  • LOCKOUT & OTHER METHODS
    It highlights how compliance with the CSA standard can help you improve your safety performance objectives and meet your due diligence requirements. This program focuses on the elements of a hazardous energy control program and how to apply them to your workplace, learning on which energy sources require locking out and why, when alternative or other control methods need to be used to control hazardous energy, as well as a step-by-step procedure to lock out machinery or equipment.
  • SAFEGUARDING OF MACHINERY
    As a reasonable standard of care, this program is guided to this standard, discussing the legal requirements to analyze the risk assessment element that is crucial to a safe and effective operation.
